The original members of the group were Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson, and Lawrence Payton, who started their musical career in 1954 as the Four Aims. The group's name was changed to The Four Tops to avoid confusion with the popular group of the day, the Ames Brothers.
