Early Life: Albert Leornes Greene, known professionally as Al Green, was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas. Raised in a religious household, Green began performing gospel music at a young age with his family’s group, the Greene Brothers. After being expelled from the family home for listening to secular music, he pursued a solo career in the R&B genre.
Career Beginnings: Green’s career began to take off in the late 1960s after meeting producer Willie Mitchell of Hi Records in Memphis, Tennessee. Mitchell recognized Green’s potential and helped him refine his sound, which blended gospel influences with soulful R&B. This collaboration led to Green’s breakthrough hit, “Tired of Being Alone” (1971), which showcased his smooth voice and emotional delivery.
