LL Cool J started his career at a young age, signing with Def Jam Recordings at just 16 years old. His debut single “I Need a Beat” (1984) was a significant success and helped establish Def Jam as a major force in hip-hop. His debut album, “Radio” (1985), was critically acclaimed and featured hits like “Rock the Bells,” showcasing his unique blend of hard-hitting beats and charismatic lyrical delivery​

LL Cool J’s breakthrough came with his second album, “Bigger and Deffer” (1987), which included the hit single “I Need Love,” one of the first successful hip-hop ballads. The album went double platinum and solidified his status as a hip-hop star. His subsequent albums, including “Walking with a Panther” (1989) and “Mama Said Knock You Out” (1990), continued his commercial success and critical acclaim. The latter’s title track became an anthem and won him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance​
