The Dells are an American R&B vocal group that was formed in 1952 in Harvey, Illinois by high school students Marvin Junior, Verne Allison, Johnny Funches, Chuck Barksdale, and Mickey and Lucius McGill. The group originally called themselves the El-Rays and released their first single, “Darling I Know,” in 1954 with Chess Records. In 1955, they changed their name to the Dells and signed with Vee-Jay Records, releasing the moderately successful “Dreams of Contentment”. In 1967, they released the album There Is, which included their first R&B chart-topper in years.
