Dinah Washington

Dinah Washington (1924 – 1963) was one of the most popular Black female recording artists of the 1950s. She was known as the “Queen of the Blues” for her bluesy tonality and suggestive dirty blues songs.

Washington’s career took off in 1942 when Louis Armstrong’s manager, Joe Glaser, spotted her singing in the Garrick Bar. On Glaser’s recommendation, she joined Lionel Hampton’s band. Washington performed and recorded in a variety of styles, including blues, R&B, gospel, jazz, and mainstream pop music. She won a Grammy Award in 1959 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 1993.
