As the head of the American music collective George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk), which is made up of the funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Clinton’s music is known for its eclectic style, which draws on Afrofuturism, psychedelia, surreal humor, and outlandish fashion.
Clinton was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina on July 22, 1941 and grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. He formed the doo-wop group the Parliaments while working as a barber, and his music is influenced by late-1960s acid heroes like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. Clinton has released 58 albums, including Computer Games, Maggot Brain, and Hey, Man, Smell My Finger, and has been credited in 53 movies, including Good Burger, Trolls World Tour, and PCU. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music in 2012.
Parliament-Funkadelic has recorded three platinum albums and over 40 R&B hit singles, including three number ones. Some of their albums include Maggot Brain (1971), Mothership Connection (1975), and One Nation Under a Groove (1978), and some of their singles include “Tear the Roof Off the Sucker” (1975) and “Flash Light” (1978).
