Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions

Curtis Mayfield was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who led the musical group The Impressions as their lead singer, writer, and producer. Mayfield is considered one of the most influential musicians behind soul and politically conscious African-American music.

Mayfield and Jerry Butler met in 1956 at the age of 14 in a Chicago church choir and joined the vocal group The Roosters in 1957. In 1958, they joined forces with a vocal trio from Tennessee to form The Impressions. The core group of the Impressions during its first decade of success was Mayfield, Sam Gooden, and Fred Cash.

The Impressions created 1960s Chicago soul music and had an astonishing run of R&B and pop chart successes, including 19 consecutive R&B hits, 12 of them crossing over into pop. Mayfield also wrote a string of well-known songs for other singers, and the Impressions sang backup on many recordings besides their own.
