Joel has had a successful solo career since the 1970s, with albums including Streetlife Serenade (1974), The Stranger (1977), and 52nd Street (1978). He’s been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999), and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2006). In 2013, he received the Kennedy Center Honors for influencing American culture through the arts. 

Joel has toured globally, including becoming one of the first artists to hold a rock tour in the Soviet Union in 1987. His band has included Rhys Clark on drums, Al Hertzberg on guitar, and Larry Russell on bass.
