Sarah Vaughan

Sarah Lois Vaughan (1924 – 1990) was an American jazz singer and pianist who won two Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and was nominated for nine. She was known for her emotional delivery, three-octave vocal range, and scat technique. Vaughan was born in Newark, New Jersey and studied piano and organ as a child. She won a talent contest at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, which launched her singing career. She performed with big bands before becoming a solo artist, beginning her solo career in 1945 at Café Society. Her chart successes included “Black Coffee” in 1949. 

Vaughan was nicknamed “Sassy” and “The Divine One”. She was given an NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1989 and inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1990, the same year she died.
