The Carter Family is a traditional American folk music group that recorded from 1927 to 1956. They are known as “The First Family of Country Music” and are credited with inventing harmony singing and making many country standards. Their music has influenced bluegrass, country, Southern Gospel, pop, and rock, as well as the 1960s folk…
The original group broke up in 1943, but the name was adapted by Mother Maybelle and her three daughters, including June Carter Cash. Other members of the group have included A. P. Carter, Sara Carter, Janette Carter, and Joe Carter. The group has released more than 60 albums, including Country’s First Family, Carter Family Sings the Country Album, and Three Generations.
The Carter Family’s classic repertoire, haunting vocal harmonies, and Maybelle’s guitar style have kept their music relevant today.
