Waller was born in Harlem, New York on May 21, 1904, and found critical and commercial success in both the United States and abroad. He has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.
Waller died of pneumonia in Kansas City, Missouri on December 15, 1943.
