Scott Joplin

Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was an African-American composer and pianist known as the “King of Ragtime”. He wrote more than 40 ragtime pieces, including The Entertainer, Maple Leaf Rag, and Treemonisha, as well as a ragtime ballet and two operas. Joplin’s compositions influenced swing music, which later evolved into jazz.

Joplin was born in Linden, Texas into a musical family. His father played the violin and his mother played the banjo and sang. He worked as a gig musician in Missouri, playing the piano for nightclubs and shows. In 1899, he published The Maple Leaf Rag, which became the most successful of his early rags. The Entertainer was featured in the 1973 movie The Sting, which won an Oscar for Best Film Score.

Joplin’s work is considered a prequel to jazz music. He composed hundreds of short pieces, a set of études, and operas in the ragtime style, which he considered a serious branch of classical music.
