Robert Johnson

Johnson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, during the Redemption era, when white supremacists reversed many of the freedoms and rights granted to Black people after the Civil War. His mother was Julia Major Dodds, the daughter of slaves, and Johnson’s music career began in the town’s popular juke joints. Legend has it that he sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads to become famous.
